The University continues to increase its research and development dollars to help maintain high-quality programs.
Representing a 15% increase over the previous year, grants and contracts awards totaled over $91.3 million in 2003-04, of which 83% was from federal sources. The second largest fund source was private foundations, followed by UC system-wide initiatives. The single largest fund source was NASA ($18.3M), followed by the National Science Foundation ($16.5M) and the National Institute of Health ($15.8M). The single largest private fund source was the David and Lucile Packard Foundation ($1.4M). The top five campus units receiving awards were the UARC ($15.1M), Institute of Marine Sciences ($13.4M), UCO/Lick Observatory ($11.7M), Chemistry ($6.9M), and Molecular Cell & Developmental Biology ($5.3M). |
