Student Surveys

UCSC conducts surveys of various student populations including students admitted to UCSC, first-year students, enrolled undergraduates, graduating seniors, and graduate students.

Surveys of UCSC Admits: College Choice Survey

  • 2007 College Choice Survey
    Respondents: UCSC frosh admits who attended UCSC and those who chose to attend other schools.
    Focus: Identify relative influence of college characteristics on students’ college choice; Summarize criteria ratings for competitor schools (e.g., UCD, UCSB, etc.); Explore 1st generation status and ethnic group within the context of college choice criteria.

  • 2004 College Choice Survey
    Respondents: UCSC admits who attended UCSC and those who chose to attend other schools.
    Focus: Identify relative influence of college characteristics on students’ college choice; Clarify criteria related to academic reputation and majors of interest based on findings from the 2001 College Choice Survey; Summarize criteria ratings for competitor schools (e.g., UCD, UCSB, etc.); Explore financial aid status within the context of college choice criteria.

  • 2001 College Choice Survey
    Respondents: UCSC admits who attended UCSC and those who chose to attend other schools.
    Focus: Identify relative influence of college characteristics, college images, and sources of information on students’ college choice.

  • 1994 College Choice Survey
    Respondents: Parents of applicants, applicants who attended other schools, and applicants who attended UCSC
    Focus: Identify applicants' reasons for applying to UCSC, perceptions of the campus, and their reasons for selecting the college they attended.

  • 1992 College Choice Survey
    Respondents: Parents of applicants who were accepted to UC Santa Cruz, but chose to attend another college.
    Focus: Identify applicants' reasons for applying to UCSC, perceptions of the campus, and their reasons for attending another college.

Surveys of New Freshmen: CIRP and UCSC Entering Student Surveys

New freshmen are surveyed in alternate years using either the Cooperative Institutional Research Program (CIRP) Freshman Survey (designed by the Higher Education Research Institute located at UCLA) or UCSC's Entering Student Survey.

Surveys of Enrolled Undergraduates

  • The University of California Undergraduate Experience Survey (UCUES) (1996-present) is a web-based survey of UCSC undergraduates and part of a UC wide collaborative survey. Students rated the academic and social characteristics of UCSC.
  • The Majors Survey (2004) provides student feedback about the quality of the undergraduate academic programs and the value of students’ experiences in their majors. Topics included how and when students chose their major(s), teaching and advising, the curriculum, educational opportunities and climate in the department sponsoring the major, self-evaluations of progress toward academic goals as a result of experiences in the major, and overall satisfaction.
  • The National Survey of Student Engagement (2000), sponsored by Pew Charitable Trust, provides information about the extent to which colleges and universities exhibit characteristics associated with good educational practices. The survey instrument was designed to identify the incidence of behaviors and educational experiences that are highly correlated with important learning and developmental outcomes of college. UCSC participated in the first widespread administration during winter of 2000.
  • The Report on The Academic and Social Environment at UC Santa Cruz (1992) covered a wide range of issues (e.g., social attitudes and activities, academic attitudes and activities, barriers to graduation). Separate sections of the report are devoted to freshmen, transfer students, undergraduate students of color, and graduate students.
  • The Academic and Social Climate for Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual Students (1989) was commissioned by the Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual Committee. The results are based on a random survey of undergraduate students and a self-selecting survey of gay, lesbian, and bisexual students.

Surveys of Recent Graduates

Graduates of UC Santa Cruz are surveyed shortly prior to or after graduation about their undergraduate experiences. Reports are usually published every two or three years. The results summarize graduates' employment and educational activities and plans, and their evaluation of their experience as students at UCSC.

Surveys of Graduate Students

UCSC graduate students are surveyed every 2-3 years and asked to evaluate their program/department as well as other aspects of their graduate student experience.

    Respondents:  UCSC graduate students enrolled in Winter and/or Spring 2007 quarters
     
    • Overview of Results for Overall Graduate Student Population
      Focus: Provides summaries for the overall graduate student respondent population regarding survey response rates, respondent characteristics, decision to attend UCSC, financial aid, housing, campus social events, health insurance, graduate student services, and employment plans.
       
    • Online Results Generator by Departments/Programs
      Focus: Provides results by department/program (with campus comparison) regarding evaluations of program/department, curriculum, resources, faculty, teaching and research experience, career preparation, funding, and overall satisfaction.
