Academic Support Planning Committee.

First meeting - Oct 9, 2001

Possible topics for discussion 2001-02

Enrollment Management. Mechanisms for managing the flow of students into the campus and distributing them among divisions, programs, courses, and sections.  These include but are not be limited to:

· Admissions to divisions or schools rather than general campus admission;

·        Modifications of general education requirements and departmental requirements;

·        Tinkering with lists of courses that satisfy requirements;

·        Affiliation of students to colleges and the affiliation of colleges to divisions;

·        College curricular requirements;

·        Marketing of programs, particularly new programs, especially via effective web site designs;

·        Outreach to prospective students emphasizing the strengths and appeals of particular programs;

·        Enrollment limits for over-subscribed programs and criteria for entry into those programs; and

·        Freshmen seminars and popular introductory courses to attract students into esoteric and under-subscribed majors.

The ASPC will provide advice on this issue. We will address the processes necessary to accomplish these tasks and outline the general resource needs. AVC Thompson will provide an update.

Narratives. What improvements have been made in the processing of narratives?  Lynda Goff and new Registrar, Kevin Brown, will provide an update.

Summer Session.  Student Affairs and BAS will develop an inventory of services that might be provided to state-funded summer students and will recommend a set of services for implementation in summer 2001.  Will ASPC consider those recommendations.

Silicon Valley Center.  ASPC will continue discussion of student support services at the Silicon Valley Center.

Disabled Student Services. ASPC will discuss issues related to serving disabled students from the perspectives of Disability Resource Center, CATS, University Library, and other service providers.

Colleges.  Last year ASPC empanelled a subcommittee to recommend an appropriate configuration for a new cluster of student housing at the so-called 11 &12 site.  That committee recommended the construction of an upper-division village rather than traditional UCSC colleges.  Residents would receive their support services from the colleges they originally affiliated with as freshmen.  What role will the ASPC have in the recommendations about future colleges?

Risk Management.  Follow up on last year’s discussion to ensure that the campus is moving forward on strategies to minimize campus liabilities.

Advising.  Advising at UCSC comes from several sources: preceptors, Registrar’s Office, outreach officers, divisional advisors, departmental advisors, faculty, student resource centers, academic support centers, student peers, parents, etc.  Will the ASPC discuss advising and recommend improvements?

Reorganization or Re-alignment of Student Support Services.  During the budget discussions this year, some suggestions have emerged for reorganizing the units that deliver academic support services.  Will ASPC discuss these proposals and make recommendations?
