CAMPUS WELFARE COMMITTEE
Meeting of December 5, 2000
The Campus Welfare Committee met on December 5, 2000 at 3:00 am in room
481 McHenry Library.
Present: Julia Armstrong-Zwart (Chair), Marty Chemers, Sheila Gottehrer, Bill
Ladusaw, Meredith Michaels, Line Mikkelsen, Frank Talamantes,
Janelle Taylor, Mark Traugott, Tom Vani, Julian Fernald (staff).
Absent: .
Guests: John Simpson,
Barbara Brogan, Willeen McQuitta, Patti Hiramoto, Rita Walker
- Discussion of the charge to the
committee by E.V.C. Simpson. Simpson encouraged the
committee to be forward looking and to take initiative in bringing issues
forward. The role of the committee is to advise him on operational and
strategic issues involving the welfare of UCSC community members. He
reminded members that they are representatives of the campus as a whole,
rather than of their individual units. Simpson identified faculty housing,
and staff salaries and merit as top priorities facing the campus.
- Chancellor’s Task Force on Work Life. It was decided
that the Chancellor’s Task Force on Work Life would be subsumed under the
Campus Welfare Committee.
- Staff Representatives. It was agreed that there
should be two more staff representatives on the committee.
- Top priorities. Top priorities for the committee
for the year were identified by members and guests:
Armstrong-Zwart – Housing/Staff recruitment/retention/Civility
Chemers – Housing/Staff career development
Gottehrer – civility code/principles of community
Ladusaw -
Housing/staff career development

Action items:
- Staff/Faculty Worklife Study. A subcommittee/task
force spearheaded by Fernald will design a study to assess staff/faculty
worklife concerns.
- Civility Code. Gottehrer will take lead on
drafting civility code to govern interaction among all members of the UCSC
community.
- Graduate Student Issues. Armstrong-Zwart will
invite Mikkelsen and Talamantes to form a workgroup to deal with graguate
student issues.
