NOTES
CAMPUS WELFARE COMMITTEE
Meeting of February 20, 2001
The Campus Welfare Committee met on February 20, 2001 at
3:00 pm in room 481 McHenry Library.
Present: Julia Armstrong-Zwart (Chair), Marty Chemers, Frank
Talamantes, Mark Traugott, Julian Fernald (Staff), Jean Marie Scott, Christina
Valentino, Sheila Gotterher, Janelle Taylor, William Domhoff.
Absent: Bill Ladusaw, Line
Mikkelsen, Meredith Michaels.
Armstrong-Zwart summarized her report to CP/EVC Simpson on potential interim strategies to mitigate the demand for affordable faculty housing. The full text of the report can be found here. Scott provided updates on the current plans for housing discussed in the report.
Scott agreed to
provide the CWC with information about housing assistance programs system-wide,
and the projected density in Inclusion Area D.
Armstrong-Zwart
will invite the campus architect and his planning staff to discuss with the CWC
at the next meeting on March 6 the feasibility and potential costs and
timelines for developing faculty/staff
housing, and the constraints and flexibility in the current LRDP.
The committee agreed that after gathering the above-mentioned information it should begin to draft a formal recommendation to PAC for interim and long-term solutions to the housing crisis.
Armstrong-Zwart raised Traugott’s proposal to convert the first floor of the former student center into a childcare facility (which had been presented to the CWC at the last meeting on January 16) at PAC and at the Committee Chairs’ meeting. It has been referred to the Facilities Committee for consideration.
In response to a letter from a UCSC employee, Armstrong-Zwart raised the issue of bringing children to the workplace. The current policy barring employees children in the workplace can be found at http://www2.ucsc.edu/hr/policies.htm. For the safety of children and out of courtesy to fellow employees the committee agreed that the current policy should remain in place. It was suggested that the current policy could be updated to include more childcare resource information, and could mention the possibility of flexible working hours and telecommuting.
Armstrong-Zwart will ask SHR Director McQuitta to draft the revised statement and bring it back to the CWC for further discussion.
Graduate Student Survey (report by Talamantes). Labor relations has approved the survey of graduate student concerns. It is being sent electronically to all registered graduate students this week. The purpose is to assess the issues that are most crucial to graduate students.
Mikkelsen will bring a copy of the survey to the next CWC meeting.
Principles of Community (report by Gottherer). The task force has met twice. They have decided to call the statement Principles of Community rather than a Civility Code.
Gottherer
will present a draft for discussion at the next CWC meeting on March 6.
Staff/Faculty Work Life Study (report by Fernald). The task force will meet for the second time on Friday February 23. Linda Listman will discuss whether focus groups and/or surveys constitute direct dealing with represented employees. Based on that discussion plans will be made for organizing the focus groups.
