NOTES
CAMPUS WELFARE COMMITTEE
Meeting of March 6, 2001
The Campus Welfare Committee met on March 6, 2001, at 3:00
pm in room 481 McHenry Library.
Present: Julia Armstrong-Zwart (Chair), Marty Chemers, Frank
Talamantes, Mark Traugott, Julian Fernald (Staff), Jean Marie Scott, Christina
Valentino, Sheila Gotterher, Janelle Taylor, William Domhoff, Bill Ladusaw,
Line Mikkelsen.
Guests: Campus Architect
Frank Zwart, Campus Planner Dean Fitch, and Asst. Director Elise Levinson,
Faculty Housing Office.
Absent: Meredith Michaels.
Zwart presented the development map from the 1988 LRDP, focusing on the five Inclusion Areas established by The Regents as potential sites for housing development. The campus currently has enough square footage on which to build to meet the goals of housing 70% of undergraduates, 50% of graduate students, 25% of faculty, and 50% of staff recruited from outside of Santa Cruz County. Each of the Inclusion Areas, however, is associated with unique constraints or challenges. Currently plans for developing 80 units (20 for rent, 60 for sale) on 10 developable acres in Inclusion Area D (adjacent to the Arboretum) are going forward, and it is expected that the units will be ready for occupancy by summer or fall of 2003. Plans for developing Inclusion Area C (North Campus) are also still under consideration, but concrete plans have not been finalized. Development of Inclusion Area C will include student housing as well as faculty/staff housing. As yet a campus decision has not been made about the type of student housing (colleges with associated academic buildings vs. dormitory style housing). Proposals for the master planning of North Campus are due at the end of March. Because plans for developing faculty/staff housing will depend on the type of student housing that is built, and on building infrastructure into the area, housing in Area C is farther in the future.
The faculty housing office is continuing to investigate various off-campus projects for both sale and rental properties in Fort Ord and Watsonville as well as other locations. The possibility of off balance sheet housing was also discussed.
The committee agreed that it will draft a recommendation for faculty/staff housing to PAC.
Graduate
Student Survey. (report by Mikkelsen) Mikkelsen presented a draft of the
graduate survey for discussion. She agreed to consult with Fernald regarding
survey construction. It will be administered electronically.
Principles of Community (report by Gottherer). Gottherer hopes to have a draft for discussion at the next CWC meeting on March 20.
Staff/Faculty Work Life Study (report by Fernald). Fernald is coordinating 6 focus groups on faculty/staff work-life issues to occur in the spring. One focus group will be conducted in Spanish.
