NOTES
CAMPUS WELFARE COMMITTEE
Meeting of April 3, 2001
The Campus Welfare Committee met on April 3, 2001 at 3:00 pm
in room 481 McHenry Library.
Present: Leslie Sunell (Chair), Marty Chemers, Mark
Traugott, Julian Fernald (Staff), Jean Marie Scott, Christina Valentino, Sheila
Gotterher, Janelle Taylor, William Domhoff, Bill Ladusaw, Barbara Brogan.
Absent: Meredith Michaels, Frank
Talamantes, Line Mikkelsen.
The new chair acknowledged the momentum of the committee and the consistency with which members described the committees work thus far. She expressed appreciation for their energy and enthusiasm, and for pressing forward with the agenda.
Line Mikkelsen, the graduate student representative to the CWC, has a scheduling conflict during spring quarter. She is seeking her replacement from the Graduate Student Association.
Gottherer presented a draft of the principles of community statement developed by the POC task force. The prelude to the principles is a quote from chancellor Greenwood delivered to the UCSC community. The seven principles themselves were adapted from the report of the 1993 University wide campus committee task force that spelled out the characteristics of community the university should embrace.
The committee agreed that the statement should be an articulation of community values rather than a rulebook with devolving obligations. Ladusaw made suggestions for minor changes to the text to make it consistent with that intent. His changes were agreed upon by the committee and incorporated into the draft statement.
The committee discussed strategies for consultation on the content and language of the text with appropriate campus constituencies.
Action:
1) Gottherer will
reconvene task force to develop plan for consultation, adoption, and
dissemination.
2) Sunell will present the draft POC and consultation
plan to PAC and the committee chairs as an information item.
3. Faculty/Staff Housing continued discussion.
Announcement:
There will be a public meeting on the development of Inclusion Area D on Thursday April 5 at 7:00 at the University Town Center, 1101 Pacific Avenue.
The committee discussed the need for staff as well as faculty housing. The possibility was raised that the rules for staff housing, and the priority system more generally may need to be revisited.
The CWC membership recognized that issues related to housing are complicated and that the campus is actively pursuing a variety of options. They agreed to draft a recommendation to PAC urging the development of a master plan for all faculty/staff housing. The recommendation will be a strong statement about the acute need for faculty/staff housing, and the imperative to plan and develop carefully and quickly. It will include an articulation of the importance of meeting faculty/staff housing needs for the fulfillment of it’s mission as set out by the California Master plan for Education, and it will suggest principles upon which the plan is developed (i.e., economy of design, environmental sensitivity, and community among others).
Action:
Scott will write first draft of the recommendation and present it to CWC at the next meeting on April 17.
