CAMPUS WELFARE COMMITTEE

Meeting of October 2, 2001

The Campus Welfare Committee met on October 2, 2001 at 2:00 pm in room 481 McHenry Library.

Present: Leslie Sunell (chair), Julian Fernald (staff), Mark Traugott, Marty Chemers, Janelle Marines, Jean Marie Scott, Christina Valentino, Frank Talamantes, Line Mikkelsen.

Absent: Barry McLaughlin, Bill Ladusaw.

Guests: Barbara Brogan, Lee Richer.

1. Announcements and General Discussion.

• In response to the events of September 11, a link to the Principles of Community Statement (POC) was created from UCSC’s home page. http://www.ucsc.edu/administration/principles_community.html
• In a discussion of the charge to the committee, members agreed that its broadness was acceptable, and allowed the committee to be flexible in terms of deciding which issues to focus on. While the committee felt that prioritizing was within its purview, the desire for some direction from PAC and the Provost was expressed.
• The committee also would like to better understand the advisory process. Specifically the committee would like to be advised on what form its recommendations should take, what happens to the recommendations, and ultimately what decisions are made.

Action: Sunell will distribute the results of the survey of committee members about the effectiveness of the committee structure and process.

2. Updates on last year's continuing business.

• POC. The committee will continue with the process of adopting and disseminating the POC this year.

Action: Mikkelsen will reconvene a sub-committee to design an implementation plan to be presented to the CWC at its next meeting on October16.

• Faculty/Staff Housing.

Action: Sunell will ask Simpson if he wants the CWC to make a recommendation about the priority system.

• Work-Life Focus Groups. Work-life focus groups began meeting over the summer and will continue to meet through October. A report on the results will be distributed to members in November.

3. Agenda setting for 2001-2002.

The committee identified the following issues as possibilities for this year’s agenda: housing, childcare, work-life, calendaring, communications, health care, and transportation/parking. Informational briefings on transportation/parking (Wes Scott), childcare (Jean Marie Scott & Lisa Bixler), communications (Liz Irwin), and calendaring (Lynda Goff) will be scheduled.
