II. IT Investment Priorities
Chair Merkley presented the group with a list of possible IT projects that the campus
could invest in over the next few years, and a general estimate of what these
projects might cost. He noted that
there is currently some funding available for some of these projects, and that
there are other avenues of monetary resources that could be procured, which
include:
The committee had an open-ended discussion about criteria for deploying resources. Some of the major themes of the discussion were cost efficiency, instructional improvement, student mobility, safety/security, risk management, and information management.
Larry asked the committee to prioritize and allocate a percentage of a set amount of resources to the list of possible IT investments by next week. Along with the rankings, he would like each committee member to offer some rationale as to how they chose to allocate resources as they did. At the next meeting, the results will be discussed.
III. Lab
Upgrades – Beth
Riddle
Beth distributed two handouts, one that highlights one time and additional ongoing costs for planned lab in new Cowell apartment building, and another that outlines CATS IC proposed Lab Upgrades for Winter- Summer 2003. She noted that traditionally, the campus upgrades CPUs every 3 years, and that some of the labs are already behind schedule. She also mentioned that labs are for teaching and walk in use, and that teaching in labs has gone up 25% over last few years. The increase in teaching use has made the labs less accessible to drop in student use, which is a driving force behind the wireless proposal. Pat LeCuyer will write a formal letter to Larry explaining how CATS Instructional Computing resources will be deployed over the next few years.
