II.        Network and Telecommunications Services Update

Larry and Bill will meet with CP/EVC Simpson next week to discuss the proposal.

III.       Wireless Access Group Report – Sam Hedgpeth

Sam presented the committee with the Mobile Advisory Committee recommendation for a wireless infrastructure on campus. ITC generally supports the proposal, but would like to see clarification on the following points: a policy statement that elaborates on the fate of current WAPS (wireless access points); a health and safety statement; and a concise cost estimate, which will come from the NTS group.  A small group will get together and draft a statement that will inform students of the new service, and a message will be disseminated through the student portal once the project has final approval. A site survey will be conducted soon to determine locations for WAPS. The current plan indicates that 100 WAPS will be installed before the Fall 2003 term begins.

IV.       IT Organization Structure

Larry Merkley has been appointed Vice Provost, Information Technology. Larry noted that in the current budget situation, many decisions would have IT implications and that ITC’s role will expand beyond reporting to the EVC.  The new IT unit has received some funding, and Larry would like input from ITC as to how it should be allocated.  Committee members highlighted a number of possibilities from previous discussions including: a campus directory, web presence, instructional technology, wireless infrastructure, and email services.
