II.             Announcements – Larry Merkley

Provost Simpson has approved the Instructional Technology Advisory Committee. Ruth Harris-Barnett will chair the committee.

The budget process has completed its first phase. A campus portal is critical in the longer term process.

III.                 Campus Portal ReadinessBeth Riddle

Beth provided the committee with information and discussed the history of web and portal readiness on campus, the Web and Portal Readiness Committee, and portal trends. In addition, she provided handouts on Web Development Infrastructure and Enabling Technologies.

It was agreed that Peoplesoft would be the vendor for the campus’ web portal framework.

No clear consensus was realized for the question of whether an outside consultant should assist with the portal process.

A draft letter to CP/EVC Simpson was distributed for feedback. In the letter it recommends a permanent Web and Portal Readiness Committee, which Beth Riddle will chair, and hiring a full time campus web architect.  ITC supports the recommendation, which will be forwarded to CP/EVC Simpson.

Beth also updated the group about four departmental web pages that are part of a pilot process for a web development framework. Community Studies, Psychology and two Biology departments will roll out new sites on 4/15. These sites will serve as models for the rest of campus.

IV.       UCSC Identity Management Project – Eric Goodman

Eric provided ITC with an update on where the project stands. He referred members to his website, http://www2.ucsc.edu/idm/, which details a project overview and status. Identity management is a service that determines who someone is and what rights they have.

Interviews with stakeholder groups have been completed. Eric and the consultant are now looking for a categorization of systems, a rationale ordering of which services need to be set up first, what products to use, and costs.  Once the Web and Portal Readiness Committee is in place, Eric will discuss these types of issues with them, who in turn will bring higher-level decisions to ITC. LASSO will also be consulted.

As a next step in the process, the consultants want representatives from UCSC to come up with some guiding principles for the project. Among them are:

ITC suggested that the directory should have all authentication centralized to make things easier for the end-user.
