INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY COMMITTEE MEETING NOTES

I. Welcome and Introductions

II.        Wireless Network Policy – Tad Reynales

Draft 1.5 of the Wireless Network Policy was reviewed. A few changes were made from the last draft after the Computer Coordinator’s last review. Among the changes was a title change for the document. It used to be referred to as the Wireless Access Policy, and now is known as the Wireless Network Policy.

Other points of discussion included section 6E, the encryption policy. The wording was changed from ‘All wireless LAN communications shall be encrypted’ on version 1.4 to ‘It is expected that all UCSC confidential communications using wireless LANs wil be encrypted’ on version 1.5. ITC members want to see end to end encryption and requested that the wording be changed back to that from version 1.4.

It was noted that end to end encryption would slow the network down to 1/3^rd of the rate of what it would be if only ‘confidential commuications’ were encrypted.

A few other minor changes will be made to the policy, and it will be reviewed again by NTSAC, before ITC sees it again.

III. Campus Electronic Information Resources Access Policy

A few minor grammatical and organizational changes were suggested for this policy including the movement of the ‘getting help’ section to the implementation document. The document was approved as corrected, and will be sent to PAC for their review.
