Information Technology Committee (ITC) Overview and Update

Larry Merkley provided a summary of the activities and issues of the Information Technology Committee.  After two meetings, the committee has developed a list of over 30 issues, ranging from resolution of specific system or IT problems to development of long-term strategic planning principles.  A list of sample IT issues was distributed and few of these were described in more detail.  The IT committee is now considering ways in which priorities will be developed and invited PAC to comment on the process and content of the ITC work.

PAC members discussed methods for developing priority in an environment where most of the items need to be done, soon.  There was general consensus among PAC members that they were interested in finding ways to stay involved with the work of the ITC and have influence in the priority process.  For more information about the ITC, see the website http://planning.ucsc.edu/pac/itc.html or email Larry.Merkley@adm.cats.edu.

Integrating Institutional Priorities—What are the “Main Events”?

Dave Kliger and Meredith Michaels lead a discussion regarding the fundamental work of PAC and the supporting administrative committees.  Questions considered:

The discussion will continue at the next meeting.  To prepare, PAC members were asked to help develop an inventory of major campus issues.  A draft list was distributed as a starting point.  Members provided initial review and will provide additional feedback by sending responses to kittle@cats.ucsc.edu with suggested additions and changes, notes on decision making criteria, notes on organizing topics for efficient discussion and initial suggestions on priority.  Linda Kittle and staff will compile the notes and distribute for review before continuing the discussion at the 12/12/00 PAC meeting.

Planning Process Preliminary Feedback

John Simpson confirmed that all members received a copy of the draft budget call distributed 11/22/00 and asked for questions.  There was some discussion about the role of the new Graduate and Undergraduate Deans and the Vice Provost for Academic Affairs as well as the Academic Planning Committee in developing ideas and plans.  Comments confirmed that planning ideas may and should come from a variety of different sources and creativity is encouraged.  However, as plans move forward for funding, there will be a need for good communication and consistent integration links with the divisional plans.
