Planning for Housing

Francisco Hernandez provided an update about the campus’ efforts to provide housing for students, faculty, and staff.

In the discussion that followed, a number of points were raised.

  • Academic deans expressed the need to contain costs so that housing for faculty and staff was within the budgets of junior faculty.  The final cost to the faculty member includes both the planning/construction costs and the financing costs.  Therefore, it was suggested that creative financing alternatives be made available to faculty; this issue is being addressed by a task force at the systemwide level (headed by Senior Vice President Mullinix).
  • Although most of the campus efforts are focused on finding housing in the Santa Cruz area, a recent faculty survey indicated some faculty would live in nearby communities (e.g., Watsonville, Salinas, Seaside, Marina, etc.).  If those areas were considered, would they be attractive to faculty and/or staff?

Enrollment and Planning Update

John Simpson distributed two memoranda that concerning campus planning:

Documenting the Planning Process

Linda Kittle shared two diagrams designed illustrate the components of the campus’ planning process:

  • The campus directions that include elements of vision, goals/“bold steps”, strategic avenues, and accountability measures
  • The “game plan” that includes the tasks that must be completed and their timeline, the groups involved, the success factors, and the challenges.

In the discussion that followed, a number of points were raised.

  • There was support for diagrams/models as they assist in the communications process.  Such process diagrams are particularly helpful when they focus on results.
  • In response to concerns about campus space shortages, the Chancellor noted, that the issue has been at the forefront of campus discussions with the Office of the President and that she has received assurances that UC President understands the campus need and will work to bring the campus I&R space inventory to 80% of CPEC standards (the goal for all UC campuses).
  • Campuses must also look at other fund sources to meet their capital needs (e.g., overhead funds, gifts, etc.).  In fact, UC Santa Cruz has academic projects (e.g., Center for Adaptive Optics and Center for Ocean Health) that are being built with non-State funds.

Member Items

  • Information:  State-funded summer session.  A task force consisting of Francisco Hernandez, George Brown, Cathy Sandeen, and Meredith Michaels has been convened to put together a white paper on the issues surrounding the campus decision about whether to inaugurate State-supported summer instruction in 2002 or 2003.  They will provide a fuller report of their activities at the next meeting.
