OVERVIEW,
MEMBERSHIP, & CHARGE
The
Growth and Stewardship Task Force will lead the campus' physical planning
effort consistent with the parameters of the 1988
Long Range Development Plan (LRDP) and review new opportunities as
well. The work of this Task force informs the decisions that must be made
in order to increase physical space and meet campus growth goals, and
will set the stage for possible amendments to the LRDP.
The
complete charge to the committee and membership
is available for review.
The draft
principles for the Growth and Stewardship Task force from May 31, 2001
can be found here.
The executive
summary for the North Campus Capacity Analysis is now available.

HOW
WILL THE PHYSICAL CAMPUS CHANGE?
The
Long Range Development
Plan (LRDP), approved by the Regents and endorsed by the City
and County in 1988, will guide the construction of all new buildings
and supporting infrastructure on campus. The Growth and Stewardship
Task Force, in cooperation with the Campus and Community Planning
Office, is leading the physical planning effort.
|
Within
the parameters of the LRDP, the deliberations of the Task Force will
inform decisions about the design and location of new housing (student,
faculty and staff), new academic buildings, research institutes and
recreational sites. One of the most important decisions to be made
is where to locate the greatest share of the new development - in
the north campus; as infill
in the core central campus; or some combination of the two. This planning
process may set the stage for amendments to or a revision of the LRDP

While
some have been worrying about how we would manage the planned growth
in student population to 15,000 on-campus students, increase the number
of faculty, and build new facilities and housing, in a little over five
years we have already accommodated approximately 60% of the growth that
we expected in this 10-year period. - M.R.C. Greenwood
HOW IS
THE PLANNING PROCESS MOVING FORWARD?
During Fall
2001 the GSTF went "on tour" - briefing decision-makers and
many of the standing committees and advisory boards on campus on key design
and planning issues under consideration. In Spring 2002 it is anticipated
that the circle of outreach may be broadened to include the larger campus
community, city and county leadership, local neighborhood residents and
members of the greater Santa Cruz community.
