Why are graduation rates important?

Graduation rates are widely considered to be a measure of institutional effectiveness.  The 1990 Student Right to Know Act requires Universities to make available to all enrolled and prospective students statistics on the graduation rates of undergraduate students.  All postsecondary institutions that receive federal financial aid are required to report these statistics to the Department of Education through the IPEDS (Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System) Graduation Rate Survey each year.

Additionally, graduation rates are used in most college rankings and are listed in compilations such as US News and World Report’s annual guide.
