On behalf of the Strategic Futures Committee, I am pleased to submit our Interim Report. The report outlines the principles and the background information that informed our initial recommendation to you and to the LRDP Committee that the campus 2005-2020 LRDP examine the physical and land use implications of a three-quarter-average on-campus enrollment of up to 21,000 FTE—a greater proportion (15%) of which are graduate and professional students. Our interim report was designed to convey what members felt was the compelling rationale for the further development of campus academic programs. We view our enrollment recommendation as an envelope for growth that will help the campus understand the land use, physical, and resource implications of campus development and not an implementation plan for growth. That academic plan for the campus’ future is something that will be developed by our faculty, deans, and administration. In framing our recommendations, members placed an emphasis on the campus’ pursuit of excellence—not on an assumption of growth. We anticipate that members of the campus community and the Academic Senate may wish to advise you about the factors that the campus should evaluate in anticipation of growth. We look forward to the upcoming joint meetings between the Strategic Futures Committee, the LRDP Committee, and the campus’ external consultants at which we will gain a deeper understanding of the physical implications of our recommendation. With those new insights and the feedback from the campus community, we plan to submit our final report in June.
