UC Santa Cruz Summary of Evidence

As a large and important institution of the state and the country, the University operates in a society in which the issues associated with diversity continue to be politically significant and constantly changing. Nevertheless the University has remained steadfast in its commitment to a diverse student body, faculty, and staff. The means by which those goals are achieved are a matter of constant discussion and modification. UC Santa Cruz’ Principles of Community state our commitment to a diverse and tolerant learning community.

Through our Educational Partnership Center UC Santa Cruz conducts outreach efforts in designated secondary schools and community colleges designed to increase college-going rates among low-income and traditionally non-college-going students. A myriad of programs and services are in place on campus to prepare students for college and support their academic success once they have arrived.

The Campus implements equal opportunity policies in hiring, retention and promotion of faculty and staff with strength and determination. These policies and the progress made in attracting a more diverse student body and faculty are documented below.

In addition to student, faculty, and staff diversity, UC Santa Cruz is committed to diversity in the curricula. This commitment is reflected in the report of the Chancellor’s Commission on a Changing Campus, which insists that the education the University imparts to its students include information from varied cultures, experiences working within diverse settings, and a sensitivity about a variety of cultures. The themes in the 4 C report led to a systemwide statement on curricular diversity, and was followed up on this campus with a panel discussion at the Clark Kerr Symposium on Undergraduate Education in October 2003. We must assure curricula and experiences during the undergraduate years that build upon diversity.
