UC Santa Cruz Summary of Evidence |
As stated in the
Bylaws of the Academic
Senate, “The Academic Senate of the University of California is
empowered by the Board of Regents to exercise direct control over academic
matters of central importance to the University. Its chief responsibility
is to authorize, approve, and supervise all courses and to determine the
conditions for admissions, certificates, and degrees.” The appended
documents delineate procedures for initiating new courses and academic
programs and for reviewing those programs to ensure their on-going
relevance and excellence. At the undergraduate level, the Senate on
Committee on
Educational Policy (CEP) charge assumes responsibility for reviewing new
courses and programs to ensure their content is appropriate for a top-tier
teaching/research university preparing students for a life time of
economic, intellectual, social and civic life. CEP also undertakes
periodic reviews of programs to ensure their currentness, stability, and
overall quality. Another Senate committee, the
Graduate Council
(GC),
performs the analogous functions for graduate courses and programs.
Sufficient Faculty. Each year, a committee on curriculum
within each department convenes to designate instructors for the coming
year’s offerings with an eye towards ensuring that critical gateway courses
provide sufficient sections and seats to accommodate all predictable flows
of students from admission to graduation. When departments develop new
programs, experience vacancies, or otherwise need additional faculty, they
propose faculty-hiring plans designed to meet students’ curricular needs, as
well as the department’s needs for research specializations. Curricular
coordination between departments is done generally at the level of the
“Division”, by the Divisional Dean.
