UC Santa Cruz Summary of Evidence

The UC Santa Cruz Community College Transfer Partnership Office [as well as the UC ASSIST for Transfer Students program] aims to increase the number of students coming to UCSC from community colleges by providing prospective students with information and academic support and by working with community college counselors to promote UCSC as a transfer destination.  The office has initiated partnerships with 14 local community colleges and supports prospective transfer students from other community colleges throughout the state.  Transfer Partnerships also oversees the ACCESS program that brings community college students to UCSC for summer research projects in faculty labs and sponsors those students’ presentations back to their former high schools.  Transfer advisors visit partnership schools about twice a month, meeting with prospective transfers to discuss UC eligibility and preparation for their upper division majors.  The Partnership Office also negotiates articulation agreements with each partnership college and evaluates the transcripts of transfer students for UCSC credit.

The STARS office provides assistance with the admissions process and on-going support for academic and personal problems.  Services include: admissions information, orientation, academic skills workshops, support groups, learning assistance and tutoring, informative talks and seminars, referrals to other support offices, family services, and scholarships.

In addition, the colleges provide specialized courses, programs, and services for transfer students.  Each college provides a special reception and orientation for new transfer students, introducing them to college services, programming, athletics, and social activities.  Some colleges offer an optional core course for transfers.
