2.2: All degrees - undergraduate and graduate - awarded by the institution are clearly defined in terms of entry-level requirements and in terms of levels of student achievement necessary for graduation that represent more than simply an accumulation of courses or credits.
All programs and courses approved by Senate Committees are described clearly in the campus Catalog of Courses (both hard copy and electronic), including: standards for admission, university-wide requirements, general education requirements, college requirements, course prerequisites, courses and other requirements for majors, and graduation requirements. From its inception, UCSC has emphasized a capstone experience (“comprehensive requirement") for all undergraduates. The requirement is aimed at demonstrating synthesis of disparate materials and ability to apply knowledge to novel situations. It takes several forms, ranging from research dissertations to performances and exhibitions to passing a subject exam on the GRE, or departmental exam, or taking a capstone seminar course or cluster of courses. At the undergraduate level, standards for admitting the top one eighth of California high school graduates into the University of California are developed by University of California Office of the President in conjunction with the California Post Secondary Education Commission. During most of its history, UCSC has admitted all admissible applicants. As applications continue to increase, and as the campus approaches its stated enrollment target of 15,000 on-campus students, the senate Committee on Admissions and Financial Aid is in the process of approving new procedures for using comprehensive review of all applications as a means of selecting the most highly qualified from among the pool of admissible applicants. Those new criteria will be clearly enunciated to prospective students before implementation. Admissions at the graduate level are conducted at the department level. Most departments provide applicants with clear expectations of their accomplishments to date and scores on the Graduate Record Examination, as well as a recent history of the numbers of applicants who have been admitted and those who have matriculated.
