UC Santa Cruz Summary of Evidence

UCSC has engaged in several recent exercises to galvanize and clarify the institution’s values, goals, and expectations. The deliberations leading to the publication of the Millennium Committee report, UCSC at a Crossroads, involved hearings and discussions with hundreds of faculty, students, administrators, alumni, and university partners. The resulting documents clearly spell out for students and all interested parties the kind of university we intend to be, including the nature of the educational experience we are attempting to foster.

Our faculty regularly engage in public, vociferous, and lively debates about the nature of our educational experience, perhaps illustrated most vividly in a decision three years ago to introduce letter grades while retaining our traditional performance evaluations. Attended by a large majority of senators, that structured debate took place within an open meeting of the Senate and featured unified vocal support from our students.

We also include here again our policies for reviewing academic programs, a process that employs faculty peers from outside the department and from outside the campus. Such reviews often lead to recommendation for substantial improvements.
