UC Santa Cruz Summary of Evidence

UCSC takes pride in the richness of its co-curricular activities, many of which serve in direct support of our core academic mission.

The department Community Studies has organized its curriculum around an extended six-month field study designed to immerse students in the social problems and social change potentials of specific communities.  Through a combination of field study and rigorous academic course work, students achieve a balance between a critical understanding of the genuine complexities of social problems, and experience with at least some of the strategies for working creatively toward potential solutions.

Located in Oakes College, Oakes Serves connects students with community-service opportunities in Santa Cruz and Monterey Counties.  Combined with similar programs in other colleges (Merrill Honor Program and community involvement in College Nine and Ten) on campus, overall UCSC students, along with staff and faculty, contribute nearly one million hours per year in voluntary services to the local community.

Our Career Center provides a clearinghouse for employers to post listings for internship possibilities, some of which lead to later full-time employment.  The Chancellor’s Undergraduate Internship Program provides students with direct experience in university operations, including a seminar with the Chancellor and the Dean of Undergraduate EducationInstitute for Leadership Development and Social Responsibility strives to engage UCSC students in university-wide learning opportunities centered on the development of leadership and character building skills.  This comprehensive approach to developing the student as citizen is designed to integrate the university's academic mission with issues of critical thinking, decision-making, civic responsibility, ethics, socialization, integrity, spirituality, and community.

Our student ethnic, gender, and sexual orientation resource centers provide students opportunities for membership, camaraderie, and leadership.

In each college, a college program officer works with students to produce year-round events to enhance the academic experience. For example, last year, Colleges Nine and Ten invited Nobel Laureate Amartria Sen, who delivered a stimulating lecture on globalization and justice. Professor Sen enjoyed a lively interaction with students from the colleges during a pre-lecture dinner.

Our Arts and Lectures series exposes students to the finest traditions of world performing arts through a program offering student tickets at substantially discounted prices.

UCSC sends the highest percentage of volunteers to the Peace Corps of any campus in the country, and nationally is ranked eighth in the total number of students who have served in the Peace Corps.  Given the size of the university and its relatively young age, this is a remarkable achievement.  Students also broaden their worldly perspectives by spending a term or year abroad or at our center in Washington, D.C.

Though we provide students with abundant opportunities for co-curricular activities, we recognize that, from the student perspective, the variety and diversity of these opportunities may not be obvious.  The Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education has discussed the possibility of establishing a central, web-based clearinghouse that would better enable students to connect with rewarding experiences outside the classroom, opportunities that might also earn academic credit and perhaps some monetary remuneration.
