UC Santa Cruz Summary of Evidence

Although it is a huge institution with ten campuses, the University of California has a conceptually straightforward organization. Ultimate responsibility for the University rests with the Board of Regents. The President of the University and the Office of the President are responsible to the Regents for system-wide policy and administration. Each UC campus has an administrative structure led by a chancellor. The administrative organization and division of responsibility for UC Santa Cruz are summarized in the organizational charts to which there are links below.

Analogously the university faculty are organized into the system-wide Academic Senate and then into corresponding Divisions of the Academic Senate on each campus.

Other WASC criteria speak to the sufficiency of this organization to support effective decision-making. At the campus level, UC Santa Cruz campus periodically undertakes an evaluation of how effectively its organizational structure, decision-making processes, and academic program review processes are supporting the core campus mission. For example, a recent external review of the campus’ top-level academic organization commissioned by the Campus Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor suggested a number of improvements to the campus’ organization that are currently under consideration.
