Course Release

Central funds are allocated annually to support one-time course release support for senate serving faculty, College Provosts, Associate Dean and Department Chair support, the EVC Writing Fellows program, the Faculty Community Networking program, and the Faculty Equity Advocate program, along with other agreed course release allocations.

By policy, course release and FTE replacement are calculated using the relevant Assistant Professor step 3 salary level, or Assistant Professor (B/E/E) step 2 for Engineering and Economics faculty unless exceptions were previously authorized. With the decentralization of the benefits pool that occurred effective January 1st 2025, additional support to cover benefit costs is now being added to the course release rates.

Below are the course release allocation rates over the last five fiscal years.

The annual course release allocation includes support to the divisions labeled as “CR Equivalents” to be used at the discretion of or to support Associate Deans and Department Chairs. The campus practice of issuing course releases is independent from the campus buyout practice. For information on buyouts, consult with APO staff at apo@ucsc.edu

The Center allocates course release in fund 19900; they should be fund swapped to IS fund 20082 when used for instructional support. Faculty requesting research in lieu of course release will have 19933 funds transferred to their research account. Course release equivalents are allocated to division in fund 20086.

Questions regarding the course release allocations should be directed to Oliver Spires (extension 2-7704, email ospires@ucsc.edu).
