Teaching Assistant (TA)/Instructional Support (IS) – Academic Funding Models

Instructional Support (IS) Model

The Instructional Support (IS) allocation is provided to be used for all forms of direct instructional support, including lecturers, GSIs, recall or adjunct faculty, TAs, course assistants, readers, and tutors, at the discretion of the divisions and other relevant hiring units. This allocation is determined for each division by estimating the number of undergraduate FTE to be taught, subtracting the expected undergraduate teaching capacity of the Senate faculty, and providing funds for temporary academic staff, primarily additional instructors, to cover the resulting estimated undergraduate instructional gap.

A final adjustment will be based on the true up when actual UG FTE and Senate FTE are known. The IS allocation is provided in fund 20082 and should be fund swapped to TA 20084 when used to support Teaching Assistant payroll.

Graduate Student Instructors (GSI) paid from 20082 are eligible to have their fee/GSHIP supported centrally through Graduate Student Financial Aid.

Teaching Assistant (TA) Model

The TA model provides Teaching Assistant support based on projected enrollments. A final adjustment will be based on the true up when actual UG FTE are known.

The Teaching Assistant allocation is provided in fund 20084.Teaching Assistants paid from 20084 are eligible to have their fee/GSHIP expenses supported centrally through Graduate Student Financial Aid.
